Mobile device security is an important consideration in the digital age, given the vast amount of time many of us spend using phones and tablets to conduct voice telephone conversations, voice and text messaging exchanges.

Android and iOS devices use different security measures to keep data safe. If you use a mobile phone for business use, it may be in your best interest to invest in Mobile Threat Protection beyond integrated systems for added security.

By making some simple changes to your devices and accounts, you can safeguard against unwanted attempts by outside parties to access your data, as well as protect your privacy from those with whom you refuse to share your information. . Getting started is easy. Here’s a guide to some simple changes you can make to protect yourself and your information online.

In this post I will give you two security methods used on both devices: data encryption and data accessibility. I will give you recommendations on the steps you can take to protect your data and improve the security of your mobile device.

Data encryption and mobile device security

Data accessibility on Android devices

Every Android app is housed in a virtual sandbox that keeps personal data safe. Applications can only access photos and location if the user gives permission. However, application data is sometimes stored outside the application and may be accessible by other applications, creating a potential security concern.

Data accessibility on iOS devices

Like Android, every app on an iOS device runs on its own sandbox. The application sandbox is created to contain damage to the system and user data if an application is compromised. The application has access only to its data and code, and as far as is known, it is the only thing that works on that device. There are well-defined protocols for exchanging data between applications on an iOS device, but both applications must agree and a specific conversation between the applications must take place for the data to be transferred securely.

How should you protect the data on your mobile device?

Android users

Check the encryption status of your device by opening the Settings app and selecting Security. The encryption section will contain the encryption status of your device. If it is not encrypted, find a time when you do not need your device for about an hour, then tap the option to encrypt it. Depending on the model and data of your device, it may take up to an hour to encrypt your device. Additionally, keep your operating system up to date as security enhancements are included in newer versions of the OS.

IOS users

Configure Touch ID & Passcode under Settings. Use an alphanumeric passcode containing at least six digits. The longer password takes longer to enter, but with Touch ID enabled, you will not have to enter it too often. Keep your operating system up to date. Apple will remind you regularly when a new version is available to install.

GOOGLE AUTHENTICATOR will add protection to your in-app accounts.

Google Authenticator is an application based on two-factor authentication ( 2FA ) which helps identify the user’s identity and confirm what a user claims to be and if he / she really is.

The application, which is available for smartphones iOS and Android , scans QR codes on participating websites to generate 2FA codes that serve as a second level of protection when you log in.

Google Authenticator is a free security application that can protect your accounts against password theft. It is easy to configure and can be used in a process called two-factor authentication (2FA) offered on popular services like Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more.

In the app, you will have a constantly updated 2FA numeric code, usually 6 digits, that you can use without sending messages. When you log in to the account, enter that code and voila, you are involved. Most sites will ask you to verify that the code in Authenticator works before you start using it to login.

Google Authenticator is used for two-step verification based on Time-Based Password (TOTP) and HMAC-Based Simultaneous Password (HOTP) for user authentication.

TOTP is an algorithm that calculates a password once from a shared secret key and current time.

HTOP is an algorithm that uses the hmac algorithm to generate a one-time password

SAMSUNG PASS

SAMSUNG PASS

Samsung Pass lets you use your stored biometric information (fingerprint, iris or face recognition) to log in to accounts, apps and websites.

You can also add personal information like your address and card information to complete this quickly and easily. Please note that biometric data and personal information are only stored on your device and are not synchronized with other devices.

You can find your Samsung Pass settings by going to Settings> Biometrics and Security> Samsung Pass> Menu (three dots in the upper right corner)> Settings

Please note: you will need the following to use Samsung Pass:

  • Your phone must have at least Android 8 (Oreo). You can check the software version on your phone by going to Settings> About Phone> Information Software
  • You must be connected to the internet (via Wi-Fi or mobile data)

To register for Samsung Pass, go to Settings> Biometrics and Security, enter your Samsung account password, and then follow the instructions to register your biometrics.

Once you have registered with Samsung Pass, you will receive a request asking if you want to save your biometric information the next time you open a convenient app or website.
If you agree, you will receive the following message each time you need to log in to that app or website.
Simply place your fingerprint on the scanner or hold the phone up to your face to recognize your face or irises to identify yourself.

Note that the type of biometrics and whether you can use it throughout the application will depend on the application itself.
Some applications may only allow biometric input to do certain things.
For example, you may be able to use your fingerprint to log in to a shopping app, but be asked to enter your password when you need to pay.
You can manage your saved data (passwords, login information, website and applications using Samsung Pass, autocomplete information) by going to Settings> Biometrics and Security> Samsung Pass and then selecting either forms autofill or Log in from the two tabs at the bottom of the screen.

You can manage your passwords and data stored within Samsung Pass. Go to Settings> Biometrics and Security> Samsung Pass> then use your biometric data to log in to Samsung Pass.

You will see a list of applications and websites that you are using with Samsung Pass under the “Login” tab. Tap on each app or individual website to view login details and passwords. You can then view, modify or delete your information about that application or website.

To add or modify stored personal data, e.g. your card address or information, tap the auto-fill form tab at the bottom of the screen. You can then add, delete or modify your address and card information.
